Embody Flow at Work

Flow blog2

There have been times in my life when I felt like someone, or a situation, was keeping me from receiving something sorely and even sometimes desperately needed by me. When we are in that place of looking outside of ourselves, we can feel very vulnerable and out of control.

I had a client who felt that her boss disrespected her and was a terrible communicator. From her point of view, this could hold back her career and she was resentful. This perspective on the situation interfered with her getting her work done and with her everyday fulfillment at work. We can find ourselves in the same mindset in relation to our spouse, a parent, a friend, or even in relation to the universe, which might appear to be denying us money we want or need.

Paradoxically the way out of a stuck or scarce place is by outflowing exactly what we are desiring. This creates inflow.

In my client’s case, she expanded her communication skills, learned to see things from her boss’ perspective, and incorporated his way of approaching issues in her communications. In effect, she gave him what she wanted to get and their relationship and her results at work improved. The change in the dynamic was coming from her own power, her inner qualities, and her deep human understanding and compassion.

We find an example of this relating to abundance from the Bible (2 Kings 4) in the story of the widow and the olive oil. A woman whose husband was a disciple of the prophet Elisha lost her husband and he left debts for the family to deal with. The creditors were going to take her two sons into slavery to get the value of the debt. Elisha asked her what she had, and she said I have nothing “except a small jar of olive oil.” He told her to collect many jars from her neighbors and to start pouring the oil into them. She was able to fill all the jars with oil and sell them to pay the debts.

By starting with what she had (and being open to a miraculous flow), she stepped into a new reality.

Eckhart Tolle in The New Earth puts it this way: “Try this: Whatever you think people are withholding from you – give it to them. You don’t have it?  Just act as if you have it and it will come. Soon after you start giving, you will start receiving. You cannot receive what you don’t give. Outflow determines inflow. Whatever you think the world is withholding from you, you already have, but unless you allow it to flow out, you won’t even know you have it. This includes abundance.“ The realization that we are already abundant, and our embodiment of it in action, starts the law of circulation in motion and it will come back to you, sometimes in unexpected or unpredictable ways.

Here are the steps for outflowing whatever you feel is missing at work:

  1. Do an inventory of who you are (qualities you have to outflow like integrity, love, creativity, joy, compassion) and what assets you have (such as money, time, things to sell or exchange for something you need, talents, connections, skills you have or can learn).
  2. Be willing to take action to move the situation forward using who you are and what you have.
  3. Have positive expectations and allow and accept the flow that comes.
